About us

Centre KemikUm – Innovation-Learning Lab of the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Education is an innovative learning environment for primary and secondary school students and future or active chemistry teachers.

The activity planning is based on the needs of our partners and research findings in the field of chemical education in the national and international context.

The beginnings of the Centre KemikUm

With the participation of the present members of the KemikUm Centre, various activities in the field of chemistry and science have been organized for several years. The activities are intended for primary and secondary school students and teachers, such as courses and seminars for teachers, events »Kemija je eksperimentiranje!« (Chemistry is experimentation, from 2011 onwards), »Kemija v življenju« (Chemistry in life, 2012), »Kemija z mislijo na jutri« (Chemistry with tommorow in mind, 2017), »Kemija rešuje zločin« (Chemistry solves crime, from 2018 onwards), etc.

Due to the great interest of various partners in such activities, the KemikUm Centre Innovation-Learning Lab of the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Education was established in spring 2017. The establishment of the KemikUm Centre was approved in the 6th regular meeting of the Senate of the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Education in the academic year 2016/2017 (23 March 2017). Prof. Dr. Vesna Ferk Savec was elected as the first Head of the KemikUm Centre.

KemikUm Centre celebrates its birthday on UNESCO Earth Day – 22 April 2017.

Involment in national and international initiatives in the field of experimental work

• As of May 1, 2021, we support the national programme to participate in Science on Stage Europe activities.
• Science on Stage Festival, Cascais (2019) – Prof. Dr. Vesna Ferk Savec was a member of the jury for the selection of the best presentations of experiments at the Science on Stage 2019 festival in Cascais, Portugal.
• 24th Slovenian Science Festival with international participation »Nature, Humans and Experiments« (2018) – Prof. Dr. Vesna Ferk Savec was the chair of the jury for the selection of national representatives for the presentation of experiments at the Science on Stage festival, Cascais 2019.
• StarT organized by LUMA Centre Finland (2018) – Prof. Dr. Vesna Ferk Savec was a member of the jury for the selection of the best performed projects in the field of STEM.
